25 YEARS OF THE HWEUCSC
As a result of other circumstances surrounding the TB Supper, we have, in our own inimitable way, stumbled into our 25th anniversary. HWEUCSC was founded on a cold winter’s night in February 1984 and we ran our first bus in an eventful and infamous trip to a midweek no-scoring draw League Cup Semi-Final at Pittodrie. More on this fabled episode in your next O&O. Meanwhile, the Committee is keen in organising various wee events over the year to recognise and celebrate our silver jubilee, but we need help to do so. Please see the feature on p7 to see how you can help. All ideas welcome.
Primarily, however, we want to organise a special event in the early months of 2010 to celebrate our silver anniversary, in which we would hope to involve all our Honorary Presidents over the years, such as our first incumbent, Brian McClair, Hoops legend Danny McGrain, clerical legend Father Dougal, celluloid legend Peter Broughan, and Clyde / Chelsea / Everton / Guardian / BBC Scotland / FiveLive / Channel Five / pundit / casual golfer / deejay / TB Supper / current incumbent legend Pat Nevin. Watch this space for further details.
We want this event to form the centrepiece of our “Homecoming” theme. Our Club remains pretty unique in that over the years we have managed to bring together those who have supported Celtic for many of their formative years with those who have perhaps never seen the Hoops in the flesh until they attended university. Such a heady mix has resulted in many friendships, acquaintances and feuds that have lasted well beyond the academic experience. As a result, despite our best efforts to plunge our members into the world of hazy weekends, late night closing, missed Monday, Tuesday and even Wednesday lectures, late submission of assignments, hopelessly crammed studying for hungover exams, and ultimate mediocrity in academic achievement, we have seen hundreds of our comrades take the green-and-white message onwards in to their careers and future lives. Now is a chance to celebrate such mass alcohol-soaked hooped sabotage.
We will be using the HWEUCSC website to encourage past members to get back in touch with us and share memories of their active service with HWEUCSC, and to reflect on their current relationship with our beloved football club. More details will follow on the website and in this next issue of O&O, but in the meantime, if you know of anyone who survived their time with HWEUCSC, ask them to get in touch via the website and get on our Homecoming mailing list. |
Our 25th anniversary gala event will be a chance for all of us to look back and reflect on the unique shambolic institution that is HWEUCSC. Never has academia been so ill at ease. Alex Salmond and Sean Connery – eat your hearts out and be amazed at a “proper homecoming”!
Colin Hughes has designed our logo for our 25th anniversary year. It is a tribute to our first ever Club flag which was made in our very first year at Edinburgh College of Art. It accompanied every HWEUCSC campaign over the years, adorning the back of our bus, but suffered much damage from Guinness, lager, tonic wine, various bodily fluids and even post-Chernobyl radiation as it accompanied a small band of HWEUCSC members to Kiev. Much wet weather and washing over time saw its writing fade, but its final demise was sealed by an ex President and his colleague, the big brother of the current President, who in a moment of drink fuelled hysteria, decided to boil wash the garment after a particularly heavy weekend. It came out as a lime green bedspread. And that was the end of our flag. RIP. Our new logo reflects the original flag, based upon a green St.Andrew’s cross although now incorporating a natty Celtic design, and also includes two representations of our original alma maters, HWU on top and EU underneath. We hope you like it. As our 25th anniversary year picks up pace, there will be merchandise available.
Further details will be announced as and when they become available. In the meantime all correspondence should be directed to:
